who didn't catch the story, u.s. today got ahold of a white house draft proposal on immigration and reported in part, quote, it would allow illegal immigrants to become legal permanent residents within eight years. the plan would also provide for more security funding and require business owners to check the immigration status of new hires within four years. in addition, the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants could apply for a newly created lawful prospective immigrant visa under the draft bill being written by the white house. it if approved they could apply for the same professional legal stats for their spouse or children living outside the country according to the draft. in response, florida senator marco rubio issued the following statement. it reads in part. this legislation is half-baked and seriously flawed. it would actually make our immigration problems worse and would further undermine the american people's confidence in washington's ability to enforce our immigration laws and reform our broken immigration system. yesterday republicans were also quick to criticize

on this behind the scenes and someone decided to give it to "u.s.a. today" and "u.s.a. today" reported on it and now everyone is talking about. the thing here, thomas, is that republicans overall criticism is that the president doesn't lead, the president doesn't lead on the economy, the president doesn't lead on immigration. the president doesn't lead on gun control if you will. when the president does take action, action that he telegraphed verbally saying if congress doesn't do something, i am going to step in and do something, they criticize him for taking the steps to jump into a position to lead on an issue that he cares about that a lot of other people care about. thomas, if the immigration panel in the senate falls flat as we have seen happen many times in congress, come up with gangs and try am to come up with plans and nothing happens. if the immigration gang falls flat, the president would be in a position to step in and say, here, here is the plan, republicans want to say to the president playing politics with this and i think the president is trying to get something done.

to the economy, to the culture, to this society on a daily basis. many of them, a majority, have u.s.-born children. this is what really it's all about. these people are here to contribute and to remove that aspect, that 800 pound elephant from the discussion i think really is a disservice to people who contribute to the prices that we pay for our vegetables and fruits, to how the economy continues to run in this country. these people are looking for politicians both republicans and democrats, and i spoke to some democrats over the weekend who, quite frankly, are upset at this leak as much as senator rubio seems to say he is because they've been asking the president to keep his powder dry, to let them try to work behind the scenes to get something done with republicans who are in many ways looking, some of them, for any excuse to back out of any immigration reform. this is not helpful, and it's certainly not helpful to the folks that have hopes and dreams and aspirations to those coming out of the shadows. >> the republican party, increasingly, becoming mono crow mattic, which is to

in the republican primary to replace tim scott who has been appointed to the u.s. senate. you may remember that mr. sanford had a few problems during his second term as governor. for a period of six days in june 2009 he literally disappeared. governor sanford originally told his staff he's been hiking on the appalachian trail but this was a lie. in fact, he was cheating on his wife with a mistress in argentina. it then emerged that he used public funds for private use a year earlier again with the same mistress. but despite this hat trick of deception, adultery, and the misuse of public funds mr. sanford refused to resign. he divorced his wife, completed his term, became engaged to his mistress, and now he says he's ready to serve south carolina's first congressional district because he knows that god forgives sinners. >> more recently i have experienced how none of us go through life without mistakes, but in their wake we can learn a lot about grace, a god of second chances, and be the better for it. in that light i humbly step forward and ask for your help in changing washington. >> unfortunatel
